Angel Falls, the world’s tallest waterfall, begins its descent from the top of the Auyan-tepui. The falls named for Jimmy Angel, an American pilot who landed on top of the mountain, reach 3,212 feet ( 979m ) to the ground below and feed into Caroni River. Because the weather is very warm and humid, Yanomami people don't need clothes. Many Yanomami wear only loincloths that look like little aprons. Los Nevodos is one of the most popular trails from the city of Merida is to the mountain village of Los Nevados at 2,750m, a collection of old adobe houses along a steep central street clustered around a tiny church with excellent views over the valley below. In this isolated village, the only sounds are the birdsong and the chatter gossip in the tinny Plaza Bolivar in front of picturesque church, with its tall bell tower dating to 1916. In the west, the area is dominated by Lake Maracaibo, where Alfonso de Ojeda and Amerigo Vespucci first set foot on South American soil. The country around this lake is ringed by a mountain range ( the northernmost extension of Andes ), creating an oval that opens out to the Caribbean Sea and dividing the area from the rest of the nation. One of the most unusual and popular waterfalls in Gran Sabana, Quebrada de Jaspe ( Jasper Creek ) isn’t known for dramatic plunge but for the brilliant orange and red jasper rock beneath its water. Kako Paru, its Pemon name, means Fire Creek, and the design carved by the current creates a slick surface resembling stripes on a tiger.
