Antonio Gonzalez-Nuñez was born in Havana, Cuba. As a child he was fascinated with drawing and painting. During his early years he remembers spending hours with his grandfather drawing with any material and media he could find. Antonio graduated from the National School of Design in Havana in 1978. Two years later he came to the United States with the Mariel exodus.
In 1995 Antonio met Baruj Salinas, and developed a completely new approach to his art. Antonio’s work has been recognized by important collectors in the United States and Europe. He has participated in several solo and collective art shows. In addition he has done illustrations for different publications and completed a large project for an upscale hotel in Washington DC. Antonio actually lives in Miami, Florida and Paris, France .
Statement of his work
For Antonio, painting is an escape from daily reality, an approach to a magic and imaginary world where memories of his infancy are brought to light through his personages. Symbols of innocence lost and scenes of his childhood reappear in his art. The work of Antonio Nunez is seen from a reference point based on primitive cultures but within a cosmological vision dealing with today’s human, social and spiritual context. Antonio’s art could be perceived as a magical amulet that confronts hostile forces, erotic or shameless impulses, and serves as protection. In his long artistic career, his work has developed a cryptogram that offer the opportunity to create a language that does not exist, and express feelings that cannot be described.
In his creative process Antonio Nunez show us personages with a quasi-primitive purity: some are like monoliths; others like elements belonging to a fantasy world; others like figures that bring us to a time of fire and iron and others like imaginary birds, vessels and plants traveling in a world of light and shadows where magic and mystery live in perfect harmony.

Atentamente.
Carlos Collado.
